Sounds of the Andes - VOL. I

This trip begins in the Paras district, Cangallo province, Ayacucho region, department located in the Central-South Sierra of Peru.

This registration is made for completing one year of death of Mrs. Sofía Miranda de Bellido; where at noon the coffin of "Mama Sofía" begins to be taken out, so that the relatives say goodbye for the last time. The husband and their eldest son give words of pain, followed by songs alluding to the farewell.

Already at night, the wake begins; where the whole town finds out by the peculiar sound of the bells that produces a peculiar and powerful sound that can be heard in other nearby towns of Paras. It is said that this bell would be composed of human fat, and brought from the Cerro de Pasco region in colonial times. (source the ringer. Mr. Nerio Pariona)

According to the bell ringer: "Only men can ring the bell; since if a woman rings, the bell would lose its characteristic sound", where she also mentions that it must be played all morning until the mourning change is made.

At midnight the songs "Almakunapaq" or san gregorios, characteristic of the Andean peoples, begin, a fusion of the Andean and Christian worldview (syncretism).

At 4 in the morning, the mourning change takes place, and in correspondence with the traditions, the Compadres de la Familia announce the presence of musicians with harp and violin to liven up the mourning change, with songs of joy and revelry until the next day.

Mamay Sofia, manan wañukunkichu, kawsakuchkankim sunquykupi; sichus qunqarusqaykiku, chaymi ichaqa wañukunki!

Este viaje empieza en el distrito de Paras, provincia de Cangallo, región Ayacucho, departamento ubicado en la Sierra Centro-Sur del Perú.

Este registro se realiza por cumplir un año de fallecimiento de doña Sofía Miranda de Bellido; donde a medio día se empieza a sacar el ataúd de "Mama Sofía", para que los familiares se despidan por última vez. El esposo y su hijo mayor dan palabras de dolor, seguido de cánticos alusivos a la despedida.

Ya en la noche, inicia el velorio; donde todo el pueblo se entera por el sonido peculiar de las campanas que produce un sonido peculiar y potente que se puede oír en otros pueblos cercanos de Paras. Se cuenta que esta campana estaría compuesta de grasa humana, y traída de la región Cerro de Pasco en la época colonial. (fuente el campanero. Sr. Nerio Pariona)

Según cuenta el campanero: "Solo los varones pueden tocar la campana; ya que, si toca una mujer, la campana perdería su sonido característico", donde también menciona que se debe tocar toda la madrugada hasta que se haga el cambio de luto.

A media noche empiezan los cantos "Almakunapaq" o san gregorios, característico de los pueblos andinos, una fusión de la cosmovisión andina y cristiana (sincretismo).

A las 4 de la madrugada, se realiza el cambio de luto, y en correspondencia a las tradiciones, los compadres de la Familia, anuncian la presencia de músicos con arpa y violín para amenizar el cambio de luto, con cantos de alegría y jolgorio hasta el día siguiente.

¡Mamay Sofía, manan wañukunkichu, kawsakuchkankim sunquykupi; sichus qunqarusqaykiku, chaymi ichaqa wañukunki!

¡Yo no he muerto, moriré en el día que tú me olvides!
